Steve Boakes [Seniors and Second-Half]
Well I am the Englishman on the staff having emigrated to Canada in May of 1992 with my wife Moura and our two daughters Hannah and Rebecca.
My journey has been a fascinating one. I became a Christian relatively late in life at the ripe old age of 40 and spent most of my working life in the corporate world. Although I had worked for wonderful companies and wonderful people God had been prompting me for some time to put both feet in the spiritual world rather than one in each. My resistance ended in April 2006 when I joined this dynamic staff team at Central Heights.
I am asked frequently what my favourite verse is but I always answer that I have no favourite as all the inspired words of God are relevant to me in some chapter or point in my life. The verse that led me to conversion however was Psalm 46:10. "Be still and know that I am God".
Moura is an Occupational Therapy Consultant with the Department of Veteran Affairs and through her work she has her own ministry with seniors. Our eldest daughter Hannah works for the Bank of Montreal and our youngest, Rebecca, is a teacher in Abbotsford. She is married to Phil, a youth pastor at Central Heights. Some may argue that this is an awkward situation but frankly it is rather neat.
I represent our church on a couple of Boards within the BC Mennonite Conference and I also sit on the Executive of the Vancouver Airport Chapel. When ministry allows for spare time, you will find me playing a little golf, watching sports or reading a good book. I have a passion for life-long learning and want to impress upon the seniors of our church that same passion, as I also encourage them to share their learning experiences with others.
Feel free to contact me, Pastor Steve or call me at 604-852-1001.
